George Canyon, Taw Connors and Whiskey Jack to headline the 2nd annual Stompin’ Tom Festival.
Canada’s Walk of Fame to honour
Stompin’ Tom on Canada Day!
(Skinners Pond, PEI) – The Stompin’ Tom Festival is excited to announce its 2018 headliners for its 2ndannual event in Skinners Pond, Prince Edward Island, Friday, June 29 to Sunday, July 1.
Kicking off the festival on Friday, June 29 is an outdoor concert performance by the son of the legendary Stompin’ Tom Connors himself, country musician Taw Connors. Opening the show that evening, from West Prince, PEI, is country artist Daniel Drouin.
On Saturday, June 30, the outdoor stage welcomes award-winning Canadian country singer, George Canyon, whose new album Southside of Heaven will be released on May 25. Special guest for that show is award-winning country musician and Palmer Road, PEI native Ben Chase.
To celebrate Canada Day, Sunday, July 1 on the outdoor stage, the festival features
Whiskey Jack presents Stories & Songs of Stompin’ Tom, a 100% Canadian show – that is not only a portrait of Whiskey Jack’s years on stage with Stompin’ Tom – but also anecdotes and songs from their years as cast members on the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show. It includes a multi-media presentation featuring audio clips and photos from the band’s many years on stage with these two Canadian giants. Current Whiskey Jack members include, founding member Duncan Fremlin, who has been with the group for 41 years, Douglas John Cameron, Randy Morrison, Eric Jackson, and Dave Carruthers. Joining Whiskey Jack for this special first-time Maritime performance is well-known Canadian country and folk artist, Cindy Church. Also, performing on Sunday is local group, Waylon’s Drinking Buddies performing old and new country hits.
“A unique thing about the Stompin’ Tom festival is that it features all Canadian artists,” says Anne Arsenault, Festival Director and General Manager of the Stompin’ Tom Centre. “That is something Tom himself wanted – he was a fierce Canadian who stood up and fought for his principles and recognition of home grown Canadian music – this is why Canada Day weekend is the most appropriate time to be celebrating his legacy with a festival in his honour and paying it forward featuring new and existing Canadian artists!”
The weekend will also feature a Songwriters Circle on Friday, June 29 hosted by Daniel Drouin and featuring Ben Chase, Rodney Arsenault, Keelin Wedge and Johnny Oliver. In this raw acoustic format, all five PEI songwriters will share the stories and inspiration behind their songs. Following the Songwriters Circle there will be a jam session and live entertainment until midnight.
Also, a Songwriting Workshop will take place on Saturday, June 30 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.The workshop, hosted by singer-songwriter Kurk Bernard, will teach the basics of lyric writing and putting it to music. There will be an opportunity to record your song as special memento of the day.
In addition to a fantastic musical line up, the Stompin’ Tom Festival offers an amazing food experience. The Taste of PEI food tent menu will feature culinary delights that PEI is famous for, including fresh oysters, steamed mussels, lobster tails, seafood chowder, bacon wrapped potatoes, potato salad, beef burger sliders, strawberry shortcake, blueberry cake, and lots more.
Event Highlight! On Sunday afternoon, Canada’s Walk of Fame will honour Stompin’ Tom. Since 1998, Canada’s Walk of Fame has inducted 173 incredible Canadians, honouring them with a formal induction at the annual show and gala in Toronto and with a permanent star in Toronto’s Entertainment District. To celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2018, the organization is undergoing a significant transformation, deepening its commitment and broadening its impact when it comes to inspiring and catalyzing achievement across Canada. Canada’s Walk of Fame Hometown Stars, presented by Cineplex, is a significant new program that brings the honour home for its Inductees with a permanent plaque recognizing their induction, mounted at a special place of their choice. The organization is honoured that Stompin’ Tom’s plaque will be unveiled in Skinners Pond at the 2nd Annual Stompin’ Tom Festival.
“Stompin’ Tom is a Canadian treasure, so it really is fitting that we are able to formally unveil his Hometown Star in Skinners Pond on Canada Day,” said Jeffrey Latimer, Chief Executive Officer of Canada’s Walk of Fame. “We are really excited to bring Canada’s Walk of Fame to more people across Canada. As part of our 20th anniversary, we are building a truly national platform to celebrate Canadian achievement.”
